IGUANA ISLAND FOUNDATION

The Iguana Island Foundation suspended all field Works of the three Programs that executed for over 19 years (Research, Environmental Education and support to the Management of the protected area). Our job is now limited to process and order all information collected in these years for publication and videos. We keep this web site to submit information to visitors and students, exposed environmental denounces and propose solutions.

Iguana Island Wild Life Refuge protects a 53Ha island covered with tropical dry forest, surrounded by more than 40Ha of coral reefs, formed by 14 species of hermatypic corals (corals that form reefs). The surrounding waters are inhabited by more than 726 species of fishes, and are visited by humpback whales to give birth and teach diving to their young. Local fisheries sustain more than 200 families in the area, and are sustained by coral reefs of the island, mangroves of the coast and coastal upwelling. The island is also a very important nesting site of marine birds.
